General Goals of Group Counseling

Some of the General Goals of Group Counseling are: 

  • Learn to trust self and others

  • Achieve self-knowledge and develop a sense of one’s unique identity

  • Recognize the commonality of the participants’ needs and problems and develop a sense of universality

  • Increase self-acceptance, self-confidence, and self-respect in order to achieve a new view of oneself

  • Find alternative ways of dealing with the normal developmental issues and of resolving certain conflicts

  • Increase self-direction, autonomy, and responsibility toward oneself and others

  • Become aware of one’s choices and make choices wisely

  • Make specific plans for changing certain behaviors and commit oneself to follow through with these plans

  • Learn more effective social skills

  • Become more sensitive to the needs and feelings of others

  • Learn how to confront others with care, concern, honesty, and directness

  • Move away from merely meeting others’ expectations and learn to live by one’s own expectations

  • Clarify one’s values and decide whether and how to modify them
