Causes of Breakups

By Dr. Kenneth Bateman, Amber University

What are some of the greatest interpersonal issues of most marriage breakups?

  • Ineffective communication patterns (insufficient talk about significant things)

  • Sexual incompatibilities (as differences in sex drive, inhibited sexual drive

  • Anxiety over making and/or maintaining a long-term commitment

  • Financial difficulties

  • Job stress

  • Fewer shared activities

  • Reduced exchange of affection

  • Infidelity (greater than 50% of men are unfaithful; the percentage of women is also increasing; an affair is really an escape)

  • Lack of sensitivity or indifference to a partner’s feelings or wishes

  • Conflicts over power and control

  • Undeveloped problem-solving skills (the art of compromise)

  • Conflicts over money, independence, in-laws or children

  • Physical and/or emotional abuse

  • An inability to respond positively to changing role demands, such as the return to work by one partner or birth of a child

  • Unexplored differences in expectations
