What happens in the first session?

The initial hour and a half assessment allows Alice to learn more about your concerns, your psychological and health history, previous treatment, and goals for therapy.   It’s also an opportunity to get to know each other better and discover whether Alice can help you.  Ms. Baland is an out-of-network provider and, upon request, can provide you with documentation to turn in to your insurance company; many diagnoses may be reimbursed.  Alice can discuss this more during your initial session.  Other services, such as speaking engagements, media tours, group sessions, and computerized nutritional analysis, vary in price.  Feel free to check with Alice about costs of these services.

How can counseling or therapy help me versus talking with my friends and family?

While a healthy support system is very important in growth and recovery, Alice is a well trained and qualified psychotherapist who can assess and diagnosis your concerns, describe and facilitate the process of change, select the best treatment options for you, and better help you help yourself.   One may compare this to learning how to build or repair a car by reading a training manual, or working with a trained mechanic to achieve faster and better results.

How long will counseling take?

This depends on several factors, including your diagnosis, the severity of your symptoms, and your personal therapy goals.  Some clients can improve in only 6-12 sessions, while others may need therapy for several months or longer.  Alice will be glad to discuss this with you at the beginning of your treatment and periodically throughout.  Her goal is for you to improve as quickly as possible according to your own abilities.

I don’t want anyone else to know I’m in therapy.  Can my confidentiality be protected?

If you are an adult client, only you and Alice need know you are in therapy, under most situations.  Should a client endanger his own or another’s life, or records be subpoenaed by a court, for example, confidentiality may need to be compromised.  Also, for those who utilize insurance companies, one’s records are seen by numerous people and may be at risk.  Please feel free to discuss your concerns with Alice at any time.  Ethical guidelines and her professional relationship with you are of prime importance.  In other cases, there may be times when bringing another family member into therapy would be helpful to you, however, this will always be discussed with you and your consent given ahead of time.

Will I be assured that what I divulge to my therapist is confidential?

Therapists and counselors are bound by an ethical code of confidentiality. What you say during your counseling sessions is private information between you and your therapist. Trust and openness are essential for effective therapy. Confidentiality is carefully protected. What is discussed in therapy is not shared with anyone without your specific permission. However, disclosure may be required in the following situations:

  • If there is a risk of imminent serious harm to yourself or others.

  • If your records are subpoenaed.

  • If information is requested by your insurance company (unless you are a private, full fee client not on insurance).

  • If you report neglect or abuse of a minor.

  • If you report sexual misconduct of a physician or therapist.
