Power and powerlessness are key issues in eating disorders.  Willpower is not the problem.  Learn about domination vs. dominion.  Do you really have a fear of power, your feelings, your intelligence and talents, your sexuality, or being a woman?  Those with disordered eating are often women with exceptional abilities.  Are you dangerous?  Find out how to listen to your personal intuition and not other people’s desire for power or control.  Experience the “Drama Triangle” and the “Winner’s Triangle” as you discover responsibility and accountability for your actions.

Exercise Resistance and Exercise Addiction.   We know that “exercise” has many health benefits.  Why then do we avoid or resist or abuse it?  When did “play” become “exercise” for you?   Might exercise resistance be a defensive reaction to weight loss attempts?  Discover what these syndromes mean, how childhood gender socialization, adolescent sexual development, cultural objectification of women, the medical model of exercise as a health and weight loss tool, and more may affect your relationship to exercise and your body.  Learn what you can do to bring more “play,” “movement, and joy to your life!

Week
8

Wednesday, Nov 12

Dreaming.  Learn how to decipher the language of dreams and turn them into a useful tool for deeper self-connection.  When a woman is struggling to recover from some form of disordered eating, it’s important to realize that food is a metaphor, and by understanding it, healing occurs.  Learning to explore the meaning of your dreams helps you recognize how these metaphors work in your waking life (as how quickly stuffing ourselves with food is a frantic attempt to stuff down those feelings that are threatening to surface or fill you up with the attention and love you didn’t receive).  Learn to recognize how fat represents insulation from hurtful comments, protection from sexual advances, safety from mom or dad, or protection from other people’s jealousy.  Even if you think you don’t dream, you can benefit from this dream group.
Week
9

Wednesday, Nov 19

Body Wisdom.   Explore the cycles of a woman’s body—menstruation, PMS, and menopause.  How were you introduced to these concepts as a young girl?  It may have volumes to speak about how you perceive yourself and your value as a person. Recovery from disordered eating calls for a new way of relating to our female bodies, one that honors and values what they have come to offer us.  Since our society often suppresses the right brain, or feminine side, in all of us, it’s not surprising that a woman’s relationship to herself is often saturated with feelings of shame, loathing, or pain.  Learn how to embrace this aspect of your being and reclaim your deep wisdom and inner knowing and apply it to your recovery.

Week 10

Wednesday, Nov 26

Assertiveness.  Learn how to better create your own path through life by feeling more confident in making your own choices, saying yes or no, being free to express your wants and needs without worrying over the feelings or consequences of others.  Break out of your compulsive eating, bingeing, and purging by learning how to express your feelings, communicate more effectively with others, deal with conflict, and take better care of yourself.
Week 11

Nourishment.  What are boundaries and how can they protect you and give you more freedom?  How well do you take care of yourself?  Self-care and disordered eating cannot occur at the same time.  Distinguish between physical and emotional nourishment.  Learn how to apply the four basics (such as storytelling, dancing, journaling, singing) for loving yourself and enjoying your creative powers.   Draw up your own contract for a Recovery Care Plan.

Week 12

Wednesday, Dec 10

Creativity Workshop.  Unleash your power, your imagination, your potential to be more alive and to heal your disordered eating at the same time!  Come to this three-hour “Ceramic Pottery Painting” and enjoy the camaraderie, the creative process, and bring home three to four fruits of your endeavors!   Materials fee extra (about $30?).   Off-site, nearby location.
